Vancouver Tourism Award

The Shaughnessy Village received a Vancouver Tourism Award  nomination this February, congratulating General Manager Jan Floody and her staff for making a positive impact on their guests' stay. "They are lucky to have a leader who does a great job boosting their morale," said Vancouver Tourism staff member Chole Hoppie.
The certificate now hangs in the Shaughnessy Village lobby for everyone to see.
"I'm very proud of my staff, and it's delightful to have them recognized by others in the tourism industry," said Floody.

Shaughnessy: The Most Affluent Neighborhood in Vancouver

Shaughnessy (View on Wikipedia)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shaughnessy is an almost entirely residential neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, spanning about 447 hectares[1] in a relatively central locale. It is bordered by 16th Avenue to the north, 41st Avenue to the south, Oak Street to the east, and Arbutus Street/West Boulevard to the west. Recent census estimates place its population at 9020, hailing from 2970 households[1].

The neighbourhood is characterized by the affluence of its residents: at an average annual household income of $136,252 and family income of $153,895[1] it is the wealthiest neighbourhood in Vancouver[2]. It is also the site of many historical homes, especially in First Shaughnessy. 51.5% of the neighbourhood's homes were built before or during World War II, compared with 20.8% for the city at large[1]. This is largely due to the 1981 First Shaughnessy Official Development Plan by-law, which promotes private property ownership and single-family dwelling, while limiting property subdivision and population density[3].

The neighbourhood was created in 1907 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, then the largest real estate developer in Canada. It was meant as an alternative to the West End, which was the traditional home for the budding city's elite[4]. Thanks to aggressive marketing by the Railroad, highly regulated development and a stronger degree of exclusiveness, it gradually took the latter's status over the past century.

Pod-style in Vancouver

"Pod-style in Vancouver"
Looking for little rest in the city?  Shaughnessy Village offers teeny tiny rooms, at a fraction of the cost of other hotels.  Originally a seniors' home, the Village was converted into the world's largest bed and breakfast in time for Expo '86.  With each floor (12 in total) donning a nautical theme and a different colour palette, the hotel has a 240 15-square-metre studios (plus a few larger rooms), equipped with a microwave, a double bed-sofa, a mini fridge, a balcony, and get this, a fireplace!  And the opulence doesn't end here.  The Village has a ton of amenities - salt water pool, health spa, tanning bed, indoor Jacuzzi and spa, beautiful courtyard, restaurant, hair salon and some of the city's most amazing views.  Catering to budget-conscious travellers, stopover tourists, hospital visitors, international students and anyone looking for a night's rest, Shaughnessy Village is worth a peek.

It's an Official You Tube Video!

So as it turns out one Shaughnessy Village employee, namely Kevin the IT man, went through the trouble of producing this fantastic You Tube Video. It's full of magical photographs depicting various aspects of the Village, including the Shaughnessy Village pool and Pitch-n-Put course. Pay close attention to the sound track too, it really gives one a sense of the mysterious.

Trip Advisor Response

ShaughnessyVillage, Director
(Management representative)
Mar 10, 2008

Shaughnessy Village operates at 90% occupancy throughout the year. What better endorsement can we have than by the people who stay with us: bankers; consulates; government, city hall, fire department and union people; inspectors; realtors; cab drivers and personnel in shipping, fishing, mining and logging; and people going to and from health care centers.

30% of our occupancy is repeat business from single students and tourists.
We feature a 3 room honeymoon suite for romantic getaways.
All units are small theme rooms, like cabins on a cruise ship equipped similar to that of a deluxe recreation vehicle.

Our studio rooms are the smallest and best priced and most in demand.
There are numerous free facilities and amenities.

Our rates include a free health club with tanning bed, aroma therapy steam spa, sauna, exercise gym, 2 jacuzzis and swimming pool. Also, free in the rate are free video movies shown 24 hrs/day, outdoor chess, checkers, and shuffleboard courts in the award winning Cupid Gardens; a free 9-hole crazy putt course and 250 ft waterway for adult toy yacht races. There is a free 24 hour front desk, hi-tech secrity and medic alert response system.
There is free cable, color tv and all utilties.

The first months parking is also free for long term guests.
All of these free things give Shaughnessy Village the 90% occupancy year around and makes it a popular destination for economy conscious long term and short term travellers.

What Vegas Hotels used to be like!

I found this Lonely Planet review and just had to post it. I'll be sure to put a permanent link in the side bar.

Lonely Planet Review

Your eyes will widen to the size of saucers when you step into the campy lobby of the Shaugnessy Village, undoubtedly the city's kitschiest hotel. But this joint doesn't take itself too seriously and that's the secret of its success. Immerse yourself in what Vegas hotels used to be like.

If you embrace all things wacky, you'll love the unique combination of flowery sofas, pink carpets and shipping paraphernalia covering every interior inch of this giant tower block 'B&B resort'. Resort is definitely the right word since the Shaugnessy has the air of an innocent 1950s Vegas hotel, complete with glass-encased displays of petrified rocks, a gym with a bum-shaking belt machine and a tree-lined 'Cupid's Garden' area with waterfalls, crazy golf and a watercourse for miniature boat racing. But the hotel is in tiptop condition, right down to its clean, well-maintained rooms. Recalling ships cabins or RV homes, these are all lined with wooden cabinets and include compact en suites, small TVs, microwaves and refrigerators. Each has a little balcony - some with mountain views. Extras include free full breakfast, outdoor pool, large laundry, health club and on-site hairdresser.
